Genesis - The Book of Beginnings
Miles McPherson - January 4, 2004

Message Recap

Today's message marks the beginning of a three year study though the Bible. This week, of course, we start in Genesis and the story of Creation.

Miles reminded everybody that each week there will be a quiz on the website, to challenge us to keep learning about what we're studying.

Again, you will not learn the Bible nearly as well if you just come listen on Sundays. You have to go home and read it on your own.

Facts about Genesis

  1. There are 66 books in the Bible.
  2. The first five books are called the Torah or Pentateuch.
These books are: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy
  3. Genesis is the book of beginnings

What began in Genesis?

The creation of all material things, life, marriage and family, sin, death, God's plan of salvation, and many other things all began in Genesis. God created all these things and established the reason behind their existence. It's important to remember God's original intent, because our society is attempting to redefine these everyday.

It is also significant to understand Genesis since it is the foundation of the whole Bible and also the foundation of your existence. If Satan can get you to doubt Creation, then he'll use this as an opening to get you to doubt the whole Bible.

Cycles of the Moon

God created the cycles of the moon. For more information, check out www.space.com/spacewatch/moon_guide-1.html.

Evening and Morning

In the Jewish community, a day starts in the evening and ends in the morning. This is why the Bible says, and evening and morning were the (first) day.

Light

In Genesis 1:3 the Bible says God created light. Of the things created in Genesis 1, light is the only thing God created that He said He was. 1 John 1:5 says God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

Something interesting is that God made the sun on day 4 but he made light on day 1. God created light as the expression of his glory. He wants us to understand that He is the source of our light, not the sun.

In John 9:5, Jesus says, I am the light of the world, and Revelation 21:23 exclaims, The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

Regarding Evolution

Evolution claims (something that has never been observed) that one kind can make another kind. There is no evidence of this in-between stage in which one animal is changing into another.

Genesis 1:25 says, God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Notice that the Bible says God created everything according to their kinds. So, either the Bible is correct or evolution is correct. It is impossible to say you believe in one and the other as well.

The Creation of Man

Elohim is a plural form of the word 'God'. The Bible uses this form, Elohim, when it says, Let us make man in our image.

So, God made man as a communication of himself. Humans don't have every quality of God, but are more advanced than animals. We have thoughts, feelings, gifts, etc.

We are more like the image of God than anything God has ever made, both men and women.

Man's Dominion Over the Earth

God created us to have dominion over the birds, animals, fish, etc, but not people.

Too often we are caught up in who we can step on and how we can build up ourselves. This is the world's mentality. The Bible says that we should do the opposite and consider others better than ourselves.

How did God create things?

Only God can create something from nothing. The word for this is 'Bara'.

God is the uncreated creator. The principles that apply to us on earth don't apply to God, in the same way that some rules kids must obey don't equally apply to the parents.

The Bible says God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is outside of time.

In Conclusion

Be certain to research what is being said. Challenge yourself to know the Bible more and watch how your life will change.
