Seven or eight years ago Pastor Miles was involved with videos that were produced for high school students about subjects such as gangs, sex, and so on. The purpose of the videos was to provoke thought and encourage answers to questions for students about the subjects at hand. When viewing the video about gangs one of the questions was, "Is there any good reason to join a gang?" Some could spout out a few answers that really didn't validate a good reason. The final conclusion was there was no good reason to be a part of a gang.
Now the question is what do you think of the devil? What do you know about the devil and his demons? Do you know that he worships God better than us?
Is there any good reason to know what demons know about the identity of Jesus? The answer is yes.
Pastor Miles began his message showing specific Scriptures that directly talk about Satan.
Isaiah 14:12-15 tells us about Satan's fall. How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation. On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.
Matthew 9:34 called Satan the prince of demons. But the Pharisees said, it is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.
The Devil is Conniving
The Devil is a patient worker who slowly manipulates our thoughts and minds. Ten years ago gay marriage wouldn't have been a possibility, the sexual content allowed on television today wouldn't have been imagined, and the Internet that offers pornography at one click of the mouse wouldn't have been considered.
The Devil is a mastermind. We must not let ourselves become weak to his schemes. Is there any good reason to become wrapped up in the things of this world and allow the ways and works of the devil and his demons to deceive us? The answer is no.
1 Peter 5:8 exhorts us to, be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Demonic activity in the Bible was often times seen in disease, physical illness, or mental illness. That is not how it always appears but we must keep in mind the various ways in which it does.
Who do the demons say He is?
For the past few weeks as we looked at who is Jesus really, we saw what His critics had to say about Him, who His disciples said He was, who Jesus said He is, His role in the trinity as Mediator, how Jesus validates His divinity, and what the word of God says about Jesus. This week we will look at who the demons say He is.
Jesus is Worthy of Worship
Demons consider Jesus worthy of their worship, as should we. Matthew 8:28-31 states, when he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.
The demons begged Jesus the Son of God to drive them out into a herd of pigs. They recognized Jesus as God and knew His power and revered it.
Worship is a response of respect. Demons never deny the existence of God. They recognized who He was and knew He was worthy. When we look at our own lives how do we worship God? Are our hands lifted to Him in complete surrender, or do we just sing along to the words with everything else on our minds but the Lord?
Jesus is God
Demons acknowledge Jesus as God, as should we. Luke 4:33-35 states, now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are - the Holy One of God!" But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.
Luke 4:40-41 goes on to say, when the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!"
The demons without a doubt knew that Jesus was God. They confessed His identity.
Jesus and the Judgment
Demons know that judgment is coming and fear Jesus as Lord over that judgment. Matthew 25:41 states, then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Demons know that their judgment is imminent. In Matthew 8, as mentioned earlier, they begged Jesus to not send them to the abyss but into the herd of pigs instead. They fear what will happen because they know Jesus is Lord over the judgment they will soon face.
Submit to His Word
Again Matthew 8:31-34 states, so the demons begged Him, saying, "If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine." And He said to them, "Go." So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water. Then those who kept them fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.
The demons did what Jesus said. When Jesus tells you to do something do you do it? What is the difference between demons and us? They know Jesus a lot better than we do.
Don't Punk Out!
God has an expectation on your life. He has called each of us to do different things throughout our life. Are we doing what He says? Or do we let our fears and insecurities stop us from doing just that?
How can you know Jesus better? Keep track of answered prayers and the miracles He performs in and through your life? Devote time to spend in His word daily, studying it and writing down insights gained from Scripture. Pray constantly, memorize Scripture, and take advantage of the opportunities to share about Jesus with others.James 2:19 states, you believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.
The demons demonstrate that Jesus is the Holy One of God. Remember that you are serving the Holy One of God, don't punk out, but step up and do what He is calling you to do.
