What is the one thing that is causing you the most anxiety?
Economy, gas prices, wildfires... so much is happening in the world that can cause us stress and worry, but our hope does not lie in the world or the things of the world; Jesus is the only One in whom we can have faith, hope, and trust and never be let down. As He says in John 16:33, I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
God wants us not only to realize His power, but to encourage one another in our time on earth. In Exodus 17, God offers us a physical illustration of a truth that He wants us to understand: that we need each other. In this passage, the Amalekites are attacking God's people. During the battle, whenever Moses holds up his hands, the Israelites are winning, but Moses was unable to hold his hands up by himself for the entire battle, so Aaron and Hur came alongside him to help.
When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up-one on one side, one on the other-so that his hands remained steady till sunset. Exodus 17:12
Our culture encourages us to focus on ourselves and be better than everyone else, but the Bible says the opposite of this. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27 We are beautiful and special as individuals because we each have a special function within the larger body of the church. Celebrating our individuality is fine, as long as we recognize that we are part of something bigger.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Being a part of the church means that we can't focus only on ourselves. We have to reach out to one another and lend a hand when a brother or sister is faltering. Because Aaron and Hur held up Moses' hands until sunset, the Lord led the Israelites to victory in their battle. There are battles all around us as well. Church, it's time to be part of the body, look into each other's eyes, and say, "You can do this! Don't give up!"
Satan Seeks To Destroy The Church
Satan seeks to destroy the church. His goal is to spread bitterness, gossip, scandal, and fighting among church members. If he can keep us focused on disliking each other, what chance do our ministry and evangelism have? It's time to stop crushing each other. We must reach out to those with whom we are angry and apologize for our bitterness.
Lord is not going to let us get away with having "solo" Christianity. He proves it in the Exodus passage we read today. He is the same God that He was back then, when He could have used the army to defeat the Amalakites, or He could have used just one man, like Samson. Instead, he saves Israel using the model of encouragement and help in Moses, Aaron, and Hur.
In the same way, you can save someone today by speaking truth & encouragement into his or her life in the midst of an anxious time.
DO something! Look around you today. Put your hand on someone's shoulder and offer some encouragement and hope.
