The Invisible Man - Part 2, The Invisible Man Is a Person
Miles McPherson - March 15, 2009

Message Recap

We are made in image of God, compatible with each other that we can have a relationship mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. No other animals can connect with this deep level of relationship. The Holy Spirit is the perfect embodiment of that relationship. He is the epitome - the best, most complete, perfect person you will ever meet.

You need to have a relationship with God as you would with any other person. However, if you treat God like an impersonal thing, you will have a dysfunctional relationship with Him. Today, we will learn personal aspects of the Holy Spirit with the hope that we can deepen the intimacy of our relationships with Him.

1. The Invisible Man is a "He." John 16:7-14

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13

The Holy Spirit is not an "it," but a "He." Our capacity for relationship comes from God and He desires relationship with us, just as we have a desire for relationship. As Adam was created in the image of God, he had a capacity for relationship unlike any other created being.

2. The Invisible Man lives in you. John 14:15-17, 1 Corinthians 3:16

"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." John 14:16-17

The Holy Spirit knows all that we feel, think, and experience. He knows how to comfort us and is there, ready and willing. He is inside us everywhere we go and is compatible with every aspect of our being.

3. The Invisible Man has a mind. Romans 8:27

Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26

Do not assume the Holy Spirit must have a brain to have a mind. Our brains are merely the physical representation of a godly attribute. God is the ultimate manifestation of every aspect of the human brain. As our minds can create, he is the Master Creator. We can plan, but He is the Master Planner. We can strategize, but He is the Master Strategizer.

Along these lines, the mind of God is an expert on you. He thinks about you and loves you. If you went home today and wrote down all the good things about yourself, you might come up with a number, but Psalm 139:17-18 says,

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.

4. The Invisible Man has a will. 1 Corinthians 12:11

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit...(v.11) But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Appreciate and nurture the gifts The Holy Spirit has given you for what they are. Ephesians 2:10 says that God has even prepared good works for you to do. Keep communicating with the Holy Spirit constantly that you may be aware when these pre-planned works come your way and respond as He desires.

5. The Invisible Man can be grieved. Ephesians 4:30-32

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30

When we sin, it hurts the Holy Spirit's heart. God knows your abilities and how much He wants to empower you and reveal to you. He knows the circumstances waiting for you to walk in them. When we choose to walk away from His will for us, it grieves Him.

6. The Invisible Man loves you. Romans 15:30

Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me...Romans 15:30

The Holy Spirit is not a force, a dove, or a light, but an invisible Person who is all-knowing and all-powerful.

The Holy Spirit is not a force, a dove, or a light, but an invisible Person who is all-knowing and all-powerful. Beyond even that, He loves us. Why don't we talk to Him? Why don't we trust Him? Why don't we let Him lead us?

7. The Invisible Man speaks. John 16:13, Acts 8:29

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13

The Holy Spirit wants to speak to you. He speaks according to God's word, in all the knowledge He has about you and love He has for you. He wants a chance to bless you and be your friend. He comes to renew your mind and lead you, not to follow. Don't pass up the opportunity to have the Holy Spirit in your life!
