Our number one commandment is to love God. Loving God means obeying God-doing what He wants, not just what we want. We all need God's advice every day. We need to walk beside Him and let Him guide us in our decisions and actions.
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'" Matthew 7:21-23
You may have questions today that will affect the path of your life: Should I invest in this company? Should I take this job? Should I date this person? Should I move in with these people? Should I take these classes?
But how can you discern God's will? Pastor Miles gave us six points today concerning the will of God.
1) God's plans are worth finding out. 1 Corinthians 2:9-14
You want to hear God's opinions. He can save you a lot of energy; He is always right!
You want to hear God's opinions. He can save you a lot of energy; He is always right! There may be many people in your life that have wisdom and can help you, but God has infinitely more.
'Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.' Jeremiah 33:3
When you make a decision based on God's leading, there are some people in your life who will not understand, and that's okay. People who are not led by the Spirit of God, reading the Bible, and letting the Bible lead them, are not going to understand spiritual things. Sometimes God's say-so is the only reason you may have for making a decision, but that doesn't make it wrong.
2) Discovering God's will is not an exact science. It requires practice.
God's goal is to make you holy. If you understand this, you will understand how His leading is helping to make you holy.
You can practice hearing God and following Him today in the little things. If you are constantly trying to figure out what God is saying and trying it out, the better you will get at it. Listen to what He says and be open. Then as you decide and move forward, you can look back to evaluate your decisions by asking: Was God honored in it? Did I grow through it? Did it bring me closer to Him? Remember, those are His goals!
3) God has more time and resources than you can imagine.
God has unlimited options. If you feel pressured by time and limited choices, bring them to God without limits.
God has unlimited options. If you feel pressured by time and limited choices, bring them to God without limits. He has infinite options and all the time in the world. Ask Him: God, here is what I believe my options and timetable are. Are there more options? Is there another way I need to look at this?
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55:8-9
People often talk themselves out of their dreams before they even start working at them! What has God put on your heart to do? Let Him provide it. He owns everything. You may not have money, but He does. You may not have connections and friends, but He does. You may not have intelligence and wisdom, but He does.
God is glorified in your life when He does a lot with a little. (Remember the loaves and the fishes in Mark 6?) He confounds the wise with the foolish, and He is in favor of people who trust him. Don't limit your options based on what you have!
4) Discovering God's will is a process.
God will guide you to do a little bit at a time. If you have a long-term vision, focus on the short-term projects. If you are faithful in the little things, God will bless you in the bigger things. Remember, God can always stop you any time He wants to. Keep in constant communication with Him as you go and He will faithfully show you what to do.
5) Sometimes God gives you options. Genesis 1
Sometimes we think we HAVE to know God's will for every little detail in our lives, but the truth is, God probably doesn't care if you get a hamburger or a cheeseburger. It's possible to make a bigger deal than necessary about knowing God's will.
If we allow this stress over details to stall us in our tracks, we'll never get anywhere. If you think God is leading you in a certain direction but you are not sure, trust the clarity that you have and move forward! God will direct you, stop you or move you when it's time, but many times, He gives you options and just wants you to choose and walk.
