Imagine if you heard on the news that Jesus would be coming to Qualcomm Stadium for a specific time, just to check in and see how things are going. This would be an event that religious leaders, journalists, and publicists from all over the world would want to attend. But the question isnt who would want to see Jesus, but whom would Jesus want to see?
In this story from Luke 19, Zaccheus, a tax collector and shunned sinner, hears that Jesus is about to pass by. As he is too short to see over the crowd, Zaccheus runs ahead and climbs a tree to make sure Jesus does not pass him by. When Jesus sees Zaccheus, He is moved. This sinner is the person with whom Jesus wants stay and visit. In Part 1 of this message series, Pastor Miles outlined the four characteristics of a Do Something church. Today we will discover what we, as individuals, need to do as members of a Do Something church.
1. A Be in an accountability relationship. Luke 19:5
Whom have you invited into your life?
An accountability partner is a friend who is willing to say whatever is needed to hold you accountable to your commitment to God. This person knows your strengths and weaknesses, cares for you, and has your permission to ask you the tough questions: have you been reading your Bible? Hows your prayer life? Did you yell at your children today? Did you get drunk last night? Have you followed through on your promises? (By the way, this is a two-way relationship, so you should equally be asking the tough questions to your accountability partner.)
Having this type of relationship can grow you spiritually by leaps and bounds.
As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17
2. R Reach the lost through an evangelistic lifestyle. Luke 19:6-7
Whose salvation are you actively pursuing and how? In whose spiritual growth are you investing?
As we see in this passage, Jesus deliberately sought out a tax collector a sinner and asked to stay with him. His purpose on earth was to seek the lost and provide salvation.
If we are about our Fathers business, then this is our purpose as well. You are Gods light, so ask Him where He wants His light to shine. Imagine if we all did that and faithfully obeyed what an impact we could have!
3. M Serve in a ministry. Luke 19:6-7
All the talents, skills, and passions God has given you are not for your sake; they are gifts to be given away, to help others.
4. Y Honor God with yo money. Luke 19:8-10Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.
And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:8-10
What Zaccheus was really doing was honoring God. Everything we have our money, our bodies, our jobs, our possessions, our homes, our families it is all Gods and is only on loan to us. He is the one who has given us the ability to work, the health to move, the opportunities to have a job. When we recognize this in humility an give back to God from all we have, we honor Him and worship Him.
The first step to joining the A.R.M.Y. of a Do Something church is to make sure your life is really sold out to Jesus. Zaccheus did not care what anyone else thought when he climbed that tree. He was looking for Jesus and was not going to let him pass by! Seek Christ out and tell Him that you want Him in your life. Once He comes in, all these other actions are a natural outcome.
