Who Is God? - Part 1, God is...
Miles McPherson - February 13, 2011

Message Recap

People often make up their beliefs about God instead of relying on any Scripture. Maybe they decide that “as long as they don’t murder,” they are really not so bad and therefore deserve heaven – or other relative beliefs. These beliefs may sometimes sound true or have some truth in them, but remember, the best lies often do.

No matter what your belief system is or isn’t, you are guaranteed to cry out to God at some time in your life, even if that point is on your death bed. Isn’t eternity worth taking a second look and examining what the truth is? It is important to understand who God is and what He is really like, not just how you have created Him to be in your mind.

This week begins a new message series uncovering evidence of the one true God, the God of the Bible. Today we will study six truths about God that are found in Scripture.

1. God is self-existent. Exodus 3:14, Psalm 90:2

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

In this story, Moses talks one-on-one with the Lord and asks for God’s name. God replies by saying He always was and He always will be. God self exists and brings us into existence. He existed forever in the past, He will always exist, and nothing can add or take away from Him.

This God is worth our worship! He is consistent, reliable, and the Rock of our salvation. No matter what anyone says or does, no one can change or destroy Him.

2. God is Omnipotent. Matthew 19:26, Revelation 19:6, Psalm 115:3

And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” Revelation 19:6

God is all-powerful and can empower us all. He can do anything he wants, as long as it is consistent with who He is. It is impossible for Him to lie, sin, or deny His own character.

If God is all-powerful, when you pray to him, don’t doubt that He can do it. He created the heavens and the earth! He doesn’t need your “help,” like a little lie on your application when you need a job, the stealing of food when you are hungry, or wearing a skimpy skirt so that He can attract you a husband.

3. God is omnipresent. Acts 17:28, Jeremiah 23:24, Psalm 139:7-10

Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.

Psalm 139:7-10

God is everywhere and unites us all. If you take a space shuttle to the moon or scuba dive under 40 feet of water, God is there with you. This can bring peace and comfort if you allow it, because you will never have to feel alone.

4. God is omniscient. 1 John 3:20, Job 37:16, Psalm 147:4, Matthew 6:8, Romans 11:33-34

Do you know how the clouds are balanced, those wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge? Job 37:16

God is all-knowing and perfect in knowledge. He sees everything we do and hears everything we think. He knows every cell in your body, your future, your motivations, your health and illnesses.

If there’s something you want to know today, ask God! His word is more valuable than any person, education, website, or publication.

5. God is Holy. 1 Peter 1:16

…because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16

The word “holy” means set apart for God alone.

God is Holy and makes us Holy. He is the standard of righteousness, perfection, and purity. He can’t be soiled or stained.

6. God is Love. 1 John 4:8, John 3:16

He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:8

God is love and He loves you! He wants a relationship with you. If there is any sin or attitude in the way of that relationship, get it out of the way! Confess it to God and experience His merciful love.
