My Story - Part 2, I Was
Miles McPherson - March 8, 2015

Message Recap

GOSPEL CENTRAL
SALVATION GOAL: 15,000

In these weeks leading up to Easter, we are each praying for three friends to receive Christ.  If you have not done so yet, please write down three names and something with which each person struggles or has struggled.

Lord, please prepare my three friends for the gospel.
1. _____________tag: drugs, prison, rape, cancer, suicide, ___________ ?
2. _____________tag: drugs, prison, rape, cancer, suicide, ___________ ?
3. _____________tag: drugs, prison, rape, cancer, suicide, ___________ ?

If you text the word GOSPEL to 59769, you will receive a link to download the new Gospel Central app.  This will walk you, step by step, through the process of sharing your own testimony. Then, you will be able to search through the various topics of testimonies recorded in the app and send them to people you know.

As you prepare to share your faith, here are four truths about people who don’t know God (and remember, they applied to you at some point!):

1. You didn’t live for God. (It is normal for non-Christians to do non-Christian things.)
2. You were unsatisfied with sin. (People seek satisfaction in sin or worldly things that cannot satisfy their hearts.)
3. You were created to respond positively to the Father’s love.
4. Your heart would only be truly satisfied by God’s love.

A testimony of salvation consists of three parts: I was, Then Jesus, Since then

Today we are constructing the first part of our own testimonies.
I WAS...
My name is _______________and I grew up in __________.
Before giving my heart to God, my life/heart was__________________________ (lonely, empty, discouraged, lost).
I believed I would be happy if I ________________ (was rich, famous, successful, etc.).
For example, it wouldn’t be uncommon for me to __________________ (drink all night, go on a shopping binge, etc.) to try to fill the emptiness in my heart.
After a while, my behavior began to make me feel______________________(shameful, empty, hopeless, depressed, etc.), and that wasn’t working for me.

Write your simple story.  Practice telling it to yourself and practice telling it to someone else.

SAMPLE: I WAS...
My name is Miles McPherson and I grew up in Long Island, New York. Before giving my heart to God, my life/heart was empty and lost, searching for purpose. I believed I would be happy if I was good at football, got high on drugs, and dated girls. For example, it wouldn’t be uncommon for me to get high every day and workout five to six days a week to try to fill the emptiness in my heart. After awhile, my behavior began to make me feel hopeless and lost, and that wasn’t working for me.

Next week we will add “Then Jesus,” to our testimonies, and the following week, we will finish the “Since then” component.

The Holy Spirit does the work; we just need to believe.

Remember that when you share your story, you are not aiming to prove anyone wrong or pushing anyone to do anything, but rather extending an invitation.  The Holy Spirit does the work; we just need to believe.

When people are touched by your story and desire to give their lives to Christ, this is a very easy way to help them do this.  You can learn it and share with others:

Gospel A-B-C’s
Father, I Admit that I am a sinner and that my sin has brought death and destruction into my life, my relationships with people, and my relationship with God. (Romans 3:23, 6:23)
I Believe that Jesus died for my sins and that His death paid the penalty for my sins. (Romans 5:8)
I Confess or agree that Jesus is Lord, that He died and rose from the dead, and is able to forgive me of my sins. (Romans 10:9-10)
Jesus, I trust that You love me and can hear my prayer. By faith, I ask You to please forgive me and fill me with the Holy Spirit. I surrender my life to You. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

My Story

This 4-part series challenges us to use our story to encourage people in Jesus' name. In Part 2, Pastor Miles presents four truths about ourselves before we knew God, then gives an example on how to write a story about what our lives where like before accepting Jesus as our Savior.
