My Story - Part 4, Since Then
Miles McPherson - March 22, 2015

Message Recap

6PM Interview with Drew Brees
Watch here »

Since March 1, we’ve seen 8,296 people make decisions to follow Christ and 305 testimonies have been uploaded to Gospel Central.  We hope to go over 1,000 testimonies today, so upload your testimony!  Share the videos by sending them to people you know who need Christ.

The bottom line is that when we follow Jesus, our lives should change.

This question should help you prepare for the work of today:  when you got saved, what happened afterward?  Did your world view change?  Did you change your behavior or attitude toward others?  Did you have different pursuits or changed relationships?   The bottom line is that when we follow Jesus, our lives should change; we ask Him to change us to be more like Him.

Just as the blind man said in John 9:25b, “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see,” our testimonies should be simple.  Though we may not know everything, we can say how our lives are different because of Jesus.

Writing your testimony should be as easy as one, two, three: I was _____, Then Jesus _____, Since then, _______.

The Gospel Central app can walk you through the writing of these parts to complete your testimony so that you will be able to simply share how you are walking with God and how He is changing your life.

For the last couple of weeks we have been working on the first two parts of our testimonies:

I WAS...
My name is _______________and I grew up in __________.
Before giving my heart to God, my life/heart was__________________________ (lonely, empty, discouraged, lost).
I believed I would be happy if I ________________ (was rich, famous, successful, etc.).
For example, it wouldn’t be uncommon for me to __________________ (drink all night, go on a shopping binge, etc.) to try to fill the emptiness in my heart.
After a while, my behavior began to make me feel______________________(shameful, empty, hopeless, depressed, etc.), and that wasn’t working for me.

At this point in my life, my belief about God was _______________.
But it wasn’t until I heard (or experienced) _______________ and that Jesus _______________ that I began to consider trusting God with my life. I finally decided that I wanted to receive Jesus as my Savior, so when I was _______________, I proceeded to _______________. Afterwards, I didn’t view _______________as my ultimate source of happiness anymore. I now know that the only way to finally receive joy and contentment is _______________.

This week we will focus on the final part of our stories: telling of the hope and change that God has brought to our lives through Jesus.

In my old life, before trusting God, I found comfort, identity, and fulfillment in _______________________(the things I did to please myself). I used to take every opportunity to ______________________(get high, satisfy the appetite of pride and ego). After I received Jesus, the things I did with my time completely changed. Now I _______________________.  My life has changed dramatically. Though I may still struggle with things, they’re getting better, and I’m different in so many ways, such as ________________ .

If someone hears your testimony and decides to follow Christ as well, here are some follow-up steps:

Let me encourage you to trust God with your life. He has been so faithful to me and has never let me down, but has always been faithful to meet all of my needs, is always right on time, and I know He will do the same for you. I accepted Jesus’ invitation into a relationship through a prayer, which outlined the terms and conditions of our relationship. It’s as simple as ABC:

Father, I Admit that I am a sinner and that my sin has brought death and destruction into my life, into my relationships with people, and into my relationship with God. (Romans 3:23, 6:23)
I Believe that Jesus died for my sins and that His death paid the penalty for my sins. (Romans 5:8)
I Confess or agree that Jesus is Lord, that He died and rose from the dead, and is able to forgive me of my sins. (Romans 10:9-10)
Jesus, I trust that You love me and can hear my prayer. By faith, I ask You to please forgive me and fill me with the Holy Spirit. I surrender my life to You. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you are with someone who gets saved, tell the Rock by texting “SAVED” to 59769.  The Rock will respond by sending that person some simple materials to help in his/her walk with Christ.

Practice sharing your testimony with people you know and people you don’t know.  When you share your faith, Remember these 7 “Be’s.” (These are on the Gospel Central app as well):

1) Be yourself – God will never require you to be someone else.
2) Be compassionate – imagine that the person with whom you are speaking knows nothing about God and just wants a way out of their pain.
3) Be confident that your story is powerful!  No matter how boring you think your story is, it's the Holy Spirit’s work to change people’s hearts, not yours.
4) Be accountable to your own words.  Have integrity to follow Jesus yourself with your words and actions.
5) Be short, say it and stop.  Don’t preach at people.
6) Be simple; this is not a Bible teaching.  You are simply sharing a simple truth about your life.
7) Be spiritually prepared.  Pray for the people you will encounter.

My Story

This 4-part series challenges us to use our story to encourage people in Jesus' name. In Part 4, Pastor Miles presents all three parts components of writing our salvation story: I Was, Then Jesus, and Since Then.
