The statistics show that 1 out of every 3 females and 1 out of every 5 males will be victims of sexual abuse before the age of 18. The majority of these go unreported and for every known case nine are hidden. Unresolved feelings do not age and eventually surface problems will appear. These hurtful feelings and memories are locked inside and often we have built a whole system of thinking, feeling and behaving that becomes our source of protection. This bondage does not allow in the love and safety we so desperately need. Feeling that we have no place to turn, we try to mask this system but symptoms begin to appear.
Common sexual abuse symptoms are:
- Memory Blocks
- Difficulty Establishing Close Relationships
- Repeated Victimization
- Shut-off/Over Controlling Emotions
- Sexual Problems
- Poor Self-Image/Low Self-Esteem
- Eating Disorders
- Distance from God
Pain not adequately dealt with or worked through warps our ability to live in the freedom God has for us in Christ. As humans we learn to put on our masks to cover the intensity of our pain and/or pretend it doesn't exist. Our view of our Heavenly Father has been distorted by our experiences in life. The tendency of well-meaning Christians is to treat the surface symptoms, but it's like trimming up the root-bound plant to make it attractive on the outside. This fails to deal with the real problem. God wants to remove any obstacles in our lives that prevent us from knowing who we are in Him and who He truly is.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40:2
