Truth + Lies

John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Growing up, my family tried different religions. I remember in elementary school we were going to a Catholic Church. I practiced the different sacraments like communion, saying the "Our Father", and the "Hail Mary", and dipped my hand in the holy water to do the sign of the cross because that is what I believed I was supposed to do. Then my family tried out Jehovah’s witnesses. I remember that I did not really understand what was going on. I thought the religion was really strange and some of the rules were weird. Like not celebrating birthdays and holidays. I really did not know what was truth and what was a lie.

When I turned 16 I had an experience where I actually had a vision of Jesus. I knew that I was having an experience with Him and I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior right then. I knew that He was God. This was true. However, it wasn’t until I was older, (around 21-years-old), that I really started to seek out the Lord and who He really was. I joined a life group, I went to church on Sundays, I served God by sharing the gospel to my peers who at the time were my fraternity brothers who were of various faith backgrounds. I was sharing the truth of who Jesus was with them.

In John 8:31-59, Jesus is having a discussion with the Jews about truth. Essentially He is saying that He is God and the truth that they believe in their own religion (Judaism) is a lie. It is really difficult for these Jews to understand because they do not believe Jesus is God. Many times when we are sharing Jesus with people it is hard for them to understand because they believe they know what truth is, but the "truth" that they believe in is a lie.

As we continue in our growth and walk with Christ it is critical that we know and can explain that Jesus is God. This is the truth that we believe as Christians. We also must pray that God will work through and speak through us as we share our testimony and the testimony of who Jesus is. If people truly believe that Jesus is God and believe in Him as their Lord and Savior they will have this freedom. Just as I experienced almost 20 years ago.
