There is a term in Spanish, “amigos con derechos,” which is translated in English as “friends with benefits.” A friend with benefits is someone whom you’re not really dating. There’s no commitment there, but there is a part-time agreement that the person has certain benefits or rights (derechos) in the relationship: kissing, hugging, regular time, or in some cases even more. A marriage relationship, on the other hand, requires 100% commitment. A spouse is not a friend with benefits but is one with you.
Marriage is a God-made union. On earth, the groom-bride relationship is symbolic of Christ and His church, so when you ask Christ to be your Savior, you enter into a spiritual marriage. That means the commitment and the rights in the relationship should be solely between you and God, not a part-time, “amigos con derechos” relationship.
There are only two spiritual powers, so if you are only in a part-time relationship with God, then by default, you also have an “amigos con derechos” relationship with the devil.
However, sometimes believers carry on in their relationship with God in a part-time way, tithing sometimes, serving sometimes, going to life group sometimes, or only being committed as long as it feels good or as long as they feel they need it. This is an “amigos con derechos” relationship; Jesus may be Savior, but there are things in the believer’s life that Jesus is not allowed to touch.
There are only two spiritual powers, so if you are only in a part-time relationship with God, then by default, you also have an “amigos con derechos” relationship with the devil and have given him rights and authority over those parts of your life.
What is an agreement or contract that you have with the devil today? You may not be entering into this contract consciously, but if you decide to believe something contrary to God’s word and truth, then you are in agreement with the enemy. The good news is that you can break that contract today by exercising the authority that Jesus Christ has given you.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26
God’s original intent is that you would be made in His image and be one of a kind. There is no one like you - with your looks, fingerprint, hair, personality, thoughts, giftings, and experiences. You are marvelous! Yet the devil wants you to fit in and be like everyone else. You are created to be a moral mirror, to speak God’s word, understand His word, and reflect His word, yet the devil wants you to believe you are a morality maker, able to create your own truth. You are created to have authority to have dominion over the earth, to live in relationship with God, to reflect His glory, and to live out your uniqueness in partnership with Him. Yet the devil wants to destroy all your authority in the earth and your partnership with God.
The devil only speaks three times in the Bible (Genesis 3, Job 1-2, Matthew 4), and his design each time is to destroy God’s relationship with man and make a new agreement. Read in Genesis 3 how he contradicts God and entices Eve to agree with him instead:
Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1-5
The moment that Adam and Eve believed the devil’s words instead of God’s, they made an agreement with the devil.
Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? Amos 3:3
When you have agreements with both God and the devil, then when God prompts you to action, instead of responding immediately, you first need to check in with the other authority to make sure he’s on board:
God asks you to pray aloud for someone at work.
You first check in with Satan: What do you think, Satan? How will this affect my reputation?
God asks you to give an offering and trust in His provision.
You first check in with Satan: What do you think, Satan? What’s going to happen if I can’t pay my bills?
God asks you to commit to a Life Class.
You first check in with Satan: What do you think, Satan? What benefit can that class really have for me? What other opportunities will I be missing if I go?
Even if you don’t realize it, when you check in first with your fear, selfishness, lack of faith, or anxieties, you are honoring an agreement to make sure you stay in your comfort zone, not fully driven by God’s will for you, and not fully realizing the outcomes of a life moved by the Holy Spirit. Each time you agree with the devil, you give him legal authority over that area of your life and you show your belief that his promises are more trustworthy than God’s promises.
God doesn’t want this part-time dating, “amigos con derechos” relationship with you. He wants your whole heart! If God has your heart unconditionally, then it doesn’t matter what Satan says because he has no authority in your life. He won’t be able to keep you from the amazing blessings God desire for you, seeing God’s living Word active in your life, or using all of your unique gifts to impact God’s kingdom on earth.
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; 1 Corinthians 10:12-13a
The devil has no authority to tempt you beyond what you can take; there is a legal limit on what he can do -- unless you give him that authority. Given permission, Satan will use whatever sin, brokenness, lies, or deception at his disposal to poison you as much as he can. If you have given part of your life over, you must officially break your agreement with Satan, and it can’t be broken with counseling, medicine, or positive thinking. The only thing that breaks that spiritual contract is the authority that Jesus Christ won on the cross and gave to you as a believer.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. Colossians 2:9-10
When the devil lies to you (anything that is contrary to God’s love for you and the truth of His Word), you must rebuke him. His attempts to make a side agreement with you must be openly rejected.
When you pray in Jesus’ name, you pray according to the authority over the principalities and powers of darkness. But authority over the devil does you no good unless you exercise it! So you must engage the presence of Holy Spirit and declare authority over the devil every day. When he lies to you (anything that is contrary to God’s love for you and the truth of His Word), you must rebuke him. His attempts to make a side agreement with you must be openly rejected.
Pastor Miles challenged each of us to get a piece of paper and write down a lie you believe. Maybe these lies have come from bad dreams, disappointments, or even from your family members or friends, but they are the plan and the work of the enemy: I’m ugly. I’m a failure and things will never work out for me. I’ll never be blessed. Getting high will make my problems go away. Nobody likes me. I’ll never meet anyone. I don’t have time to serve others. I don’t have enough money to tithe. Prayer won’t make any difference in my health. God doesn’t want me. I need a bottle of wine to deal with my stress. Sleeping around will make me feel more desirable. Watching porn won’t affect me. If I just work harder and accomplish more, then people will respect me. Whatever the lie is, recognize that believing it is making an agreement with the devil and giving him legal jurisdiction in your life to destroy you.
Today is the day to take back the authority Christ has given you to rebuke the devil. Break any contracts you have with Satan, agree with God’s truth, and turn your 100% commitment over to God. Pray to break these agreements in the name of Jesus -- and tear up that contract!
