The Source - Part 1, Good or Great
Miles McPherson - November 4, 2012

Message Recap

Pastor Miles began a new series today by asking a simple question: Are you in or are you out?

The Rock Church is not in existence simply to draw a crowd and share some information.  We have a real mission and vision that we will pursue until our last breaths.  Maybe you’ve been coming a while and don’t know where you fit in.  Maybe you are already serving passionately in ministry and pursuing our mission.  Maybe you will decide that you aren’t interested in pursuing the mission of the Rock and that you would rather just sit in a service and feel comfortable, never sharing or serving others in a ministry capacity (although as Pastor Miles would argue, that is not a biblical view of Christian discipleship).  In any case, it’s time to choose a side!

God is the source of all good things, but He doesn’t simply want you receive blessing and stop there.

God is the source of all good things, but He doesn’t simply want you receive blessing and stop there.  In this series, we will glean from the life of Abraham to learn how God blesses us so that we can bless others – making us the source of light and blessing to our world.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  2 Corinthians 1:3-4

The Rock’s mission is to save, equip, and send.  If we fulfill that mission, we accomplish our vision of global pervasive hope.  It’s important to be on board with the mission of your church because it’s not going to stop; it will be our focus as long as we exist.

In Genesis 12:1-3, God says to Abraham:

“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Again and again, God gives His promises by saying, “I will.”  In the same way, God promises to bless you so that you can be a blessing to others – your family, employees, coworkers, church, employer, neighbors, teammates, etc.  You have the opportunity to be a source of light to the world!  But if you are not on the same page, church will not be what it is supposed to be for you.  We all need to be going in the same direction so that we can be the blessing that God calls us to be.

1. Do you want to be a source of eternal salvation?

Do you care if the people you know (or meet) are going to heaven or hell?  Do you care enough to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation in order to help them understand the truth?

We never want our church to be filled with mature Christians just sitting and listening.  If that were the case, we would not be doing our jobs!  Our work our function would cease.  Church isn’t a “members only” country club!  We want to draw in people who need the gospel so that their lives can be changed too.

Pastor Miles reminded us that nobody watches a football game to see the huddle, rather the execution of the play that happens after the plan is shared.  Church services are only our huddle, not the main event.  The point is how we act on the truths we hear and the ministry in play outside of church.

2. Do you want to be the source of encouragement for spiritual growth in someone’s life?

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Matthew 28:19

Jesus left very clear instructions for His followers.  We are not simply to believe in Him and follow Him around, but to be like Him and do as He did.  Church is not Bible school.  It is designed to equip you to share with the world.  You will never ever learn as much in a church service as you can by sharing the message with someone else.

If you shy away from helping others because you don’t want to give up your time or be involved in other people’s drama, that’s just selfishness.  Our church wants to reach out and help people in need of Christ – as many people as possible!

And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:2

3. Do you want to be a source of ministry?

 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,  Ephesians 4:11-12

Our church is not like Burger King, where you “have it your way,” but rather like The Home Depot, where “you can do it, we can help.”

You can be a light to others, right where you are, in the context of your world.

You can be a light to others, right where you are, in the context of your world.  Do you have others around you who are helping you to grow spiritually?  How can you do that for others?

Our church shouldn’t just be a meeting house, but a place for you to get charged up, understand your purpose and go out into the world to fulfill that purpose.  Prepare your heart to hear from God in the coming weeks about how you can be a source of blessing to others and accomplish that which God has set before you!

The Source

This 7-part series asks, are we Takers or Givers? Are we going to give of ourselves so we can receive what God has for us? In Part 1, Pastor Miles asks us if we are going to be a source for God to bless others.
