God In The Mirror - Part 1, Image
Miles McPherson - April 21, 2013

Message Recap

God made us all to be His children.  What does He expect to see when He looks at us?  Just as a mother would expect to see her own features or characteristics reflected in her child, God expects to see Himself in us.  So what does it mean to display the image of God in our lives?

Often we look to other people and try to imitate them out of admiration, but God didn’t make us in the image of culture or celebrities.  He made us in His own image, so we should look to Him to find out how we should be.

Just as a mother would expect to see her own features or characteristics reflected in her child, God expects to see Himself in us.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse… Romans 1:20

Before any discussion can take place about what it means to reflect God’s image, you need to decide definitively whether or not God created you.

Contrary to popular belief, evolution is not a proven truth; that is why it is called a theory.  If you think about it, it is actually unscientific for nothing to create anything.  Even if you’d like to fall back on the Big Bang Theory, then you must still wonder…from where did the material come to get “banged?” And from where did the power come “bang” it?  And when was the last time that an explosion ever created anything beautiful?  (An explosion only creates chaos!)

You wouldn’t believe that a shirt could make itself, sew on its own buttons, and fit itself to a particular body to give itself a purpose of covering skin, so how could you believe that all the complicated, unfathomable beauty of the universe could cause itself from chaos?

Romans 1:20 tells us that God’s invisible attributes – His creativity, intelligence, organization, power, and love, and godliness – are clearly seen when we study the world and all He has made. If we have ever seen a sunset or pondered the amazing capability of the human eye, then we are without excuse.  After seeing all of the wonder there is to experience on earth, if we can’t believe that Someone intelligent created and organized it, then we are held in judgment.

God doesn’t need evolution. He created you, a being in His own image, on purpose.  You are amazing, eternal, and royal in the eyes of God—not an animal or an accident.  After all the amazing and vast creations we see around us, God created humans – His masterpiece – in His own image.

Here is an overview the five components about God’s image that we will explore in the next several weeks:

I - We are Individually unique. Psalm 139:13-15

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
  Psalm 139:13-15

You are wonderful!  You are marvelous!  God made you to stand out.  You are a one-of-a-kind expression of His attributes.  He gave you personality, attitudes, perspectives that are unique to you.  When the world sees you, the world is seeing God in a completely unique way, never seen before.

M - We are God’s Moral mirrors.  Psalm 119:9

Morality is sense of right and wrong.  We can understand it, display it, teach it, encourage it, and hunger and thirst for it.  If you read your Bible to a dog or a tree, nothing will happen. But God’s Word can actually be received by a person.

(Note that we are not called to create our own morality, but to understand and reflect God’s.)

A - We have been given the Authority to rule.  Genesis 1:26-28

When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them dominion over animals and environments, not people.

When someone takes authority of a person, that’s called slavery.  Men don’t have authority to control women, and vice versa. Ephesians 5 tells us that wives are to submit to their husbands, and husbands are to lay down their lives for their wives.  This is a mutual respect and service which creates an environment where God’s purposes are fulfilled.

Even in the church setting, though we have a leader in Pastor Miles, he is not called to control us.  His and the other church leaders’ responsibility is to create an environment in our ministry where we can experience God and be what God has called us to be.

G - We are to live in relationship as God’s friends.  Exodus 33:11, Luke 7:34, John 15:13-15

And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”  Genesis 2:18

An individual human cannot fulfill the purpose for which humans were created.  Humans were created to enjoy what God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) already enjoyed.  He created us to have relationships in which we can display His love, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and empathy – one to another.

E - We are Eternal. Ecclesiates 3:11

God made you in his image as a glove is made for a hand.  The glove does nothing until the hand is inside it to make it move.  Before God Himself is living in you, your God-image is spiritually dead or unable to please Him.  But once the Spirit of God comes to live in you, you are made spiritually alive, or born again (John 3:3).

God has created you uniquely to reflect Him, have relationship with Him, and help you to become all you were created to be.  Open the door and let Him in!

Not only does God want to bring you to life on earth to give you hope, understanding, strength, and relationship for now, He wants to provide you with eternal life forever.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  John 3:16

God has created you uniquely to reflect Him, have relationship with Him, and help you to become all you were created to be.  Open the door and let Him in!

God In The Mirror
