What If? - Part 5, What If I Prayed AWCIPA?
Miles McPherson - October 5, 2014

Message Recap

Today, Pastor Miles led us through a guide to focused and powerful prayer. AWCIPA is an acronym for six sections of the Lord’s prayer (as Jesus taught his disciples to pray), which are not a formula, but a guide that can help us to stay on track and have a correct spiritual posture in our prayer life.

AWCIPA: A guide, not a formula, to focused and powerful prayer.

A: Admiration and Praise; or Appreciate with praise.

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Matthew 6:9

Give honor to the King of the Kingdom (Psalm 9:1).

First we acknowledge that God is enthroned in heaven.  We’re not having a conversation with one of our homeboys.  This is a holy God and there is none like Him on earth.  This is why we kneel, or at least approach Him with humility in our hearts.  With admiration, we honor the King, appreciate Him, and bring Him glory.

Lord, I praise You for _______________.  I thank you for __________________.

Tell the Lord that He is powerful, awesome, faithful, and that He is on his throne in heaven and you are not.

W: Ask for Thy Will to be done.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it in heaven.Matthew 6:10

Pray to know the Kingdom agenda. Matthew 26

God can do things that we cannot do.  In this part of our prayer, we ask Him to do things on earth that are consistent with what He does in heaven.   When we pray for our own desires, ultimately God’s will trumps ours.  Here we tell the Lord that we want what He wants when it concerns our health, our relationships, our finances, our careers, our studies, our time, etc.

Lord, may thy Will be done in ____________________.

Pray that God’s kingdom standard would be realized in your life.

C: Pray for Communion with God.

Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11

God feeds us and takes care of our earthly needs, but also our spiritual needs.  Jesus said that His food was not bread, but doing the will of the Father.

May you be spiritually filled up and walk in the presence of God every day.  Be ready at any moment to minister to someone else.  May God’s daily bread feed you on a spiritual level.

Pray for Kingdom food. Psalm 51:10-11, Psalm 16:11

Dear God, please bless me with your presence and the spiritual (strength, wisdom, vision, faith) to faithfully obey you today.

Pray that God would fill you with His presence.

I: Intercede for other people.

And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. Matthew 6:12

We ask for God to forgive us as we forgive others.  Imagine if God held grudges, had a critical spirit, or gossiped as we do!   At this point in prayer, we want to call to mind anyone whom we need to forgive and actually release or forgive that person or people.

Pray to have Kingdom of God relationships. Matthew 5:44

God, please cleanse my heart of _______________.

Ask the Lord to help you to diligently and sincerely forgive everyone who needs forgiveness in your life.   Thank Him for forgiving you when you may not even realize you need forgiveness.  Ask Him to cleanse your heart of bitterness, anger, and jealousy toward others and that He would draw those friends and enemies close to Himself and bless them.

P: Petition for power.

And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. Matthew 6:13a

You can’t be delivered from the strong man (Satan) unless a stronger man (God) sets you free.  Some of us are held in the grip of in sin, pride, pornography, jealousy, anger, or addiction because we have not embraced the freedom that God gives us.

Pray to exercise Kingdom of God power. Ephesians 6:10-13, 1 Corinthians 10:13

Lord, please grant me the power and authority to _____________ (overcome sin or temptation, heal someone, exercise courage and faith).

Pray that God will help you to access the authority and power He has appropriated to you.

A: Admiration and Praise; or Appreciate with praise.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Matthew 6:13b

We end where we began, admiring and appreciating the Lord on high.

Pray for the eternal glory of the King. Psalm 119:164
