Civil Conversation: The "us vs. them" trap

by A Rock Stories Contributor

Have you ever felt like you were in the middle, surrounded by noise, drama, and people demanding you to take a side? Whether it’s conflict in our country, drama in our social circles, or personal trials that feel like a fire, we all face moments where we wonder if God is still there.

In his powerful sermon, "Truth in Tension," Pastor Miles McPherson addresses the reality of being "canceled" and the overwhelming pressure to choose an "us vs. them" mentality. If you’ve ever struggled to keep your peace when the world feels divided, this is for you.

The Question We All Ask: Whose Side is God On?

When Joshua was leading the Israelites toward the Promised Land, he encountered a man with a drawn sword and asked the ultimate question: "Are you for us or our adversary?".

In today’s culture, we do the same. We demand to know if God is on the side of our political party, our race, or our specific point of view. But the response Joshua received was a radical, perspective-shifting "No".

As Pastor Miles explains, God isn't looking to join our sides; He is the Commander of the Lord’s Army, and we are called to be on His side. Unity doesn't come from winning an argument—it comes from submitting to God's way and God's timing.

Trusting God in the "Middle"

Drawing from the story of Lazarus, Pastor Miles challenges us to think about how we view life after a resurrection. The real test of our faith isn't just how we act when things are going well, but do you trust God when you are in the middle?

When we go through trials, our mandate remains the same:

  • Respond in a way that honors God.
  • Trust His faithfulness over the gossip and noise.
  • Love and forgive people, no matter what they do.

The "Third Option": Honor Over Division

In a world that forces us to choose between two conflicting sides, there is a "Third Option." This biblical approach focuses on honoring what we have in common—the image of God in every human being.

Instead of reciprocating hate with hate, we are called to a higher standard of self-sacrificial love.

This means:

  1. Denying yourself: Putting aside your own pride and sinful flesh.
  2. Suffering love: Choosing to lay down your life for others, just as Christ did.
  3. Redemptive love: Doing what God does by keeping His commandments and seeking to save the lost.
