The Adoption Decision
| Questions to Consider | Infant Adoption Adoption Center of San Diego | Foster Care Adoption Oliver Crest |
|
I am interested
in adopting:
| Most placements with the Adoption Center of San Diego are newborns that are placed at birth. | Olive Crest specializes in matching children in the foster care system who are over the age of three, of all ethnicities, and often part of a sibling set. |
| It is important for me to know the complete medical and social history of my child. | Birthmothers sign a medical release releasing prenatal and delivery records. They also  complete a family health history background form. Medical and other background information is usually, but not always, available. | Although background information for a child in foster care may be incomplete, current medical information will be available. |
| I can consider parenting a child with some sort of disability. | Keep in mind, there are no guarantees of perfect health for any child. | Olive Crest is licensed to place children who suffer from trauma-based behaviors and occasional medical issues. |
| I am prepared for the visibility and responsibilities of raising a child who is racially dissimilar to me. | Infants waiting to be placed may be Asian, black, Hispanic, white, or of mixed race | |
|
I hope to adopt
within:
| Olive Crest's certification process takes approximately five-to-six months. The average adoption is complete within 18 months of a child being placed. | |
| I am emotionally prepared for the uncertainty in the adoption process. | Olive Crest participates in helping an interested family determine its ability to care for children in the foster care system. Olive Crest provides education and support through weekly home visits, school/resource coordination, and monthly financial reimbursement. | |
|
I have the
following resources to commit to adopting a child:
| Olive Crest does not charge any fees for its services, and provides a monthly reimbursement while a child is in a "foster" status. Once an adoption is finalized, the adoptive family qualifies for a monthly stipend. Most families are eligible for a Federal Tax Credit of up to $12,150. Medical, dental, and counseling are covered through Medi-Cal until a child is 18. |
