Prayer Uncle
Miles McPherson - July 4, 2004

Message Recap

This Sunday, the Rock celebrated the Fourth of July with services at the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island. Miles continued our study through Genesis with a message comparing Jacob's wrestling with God to our need to wrestle with God.

Wrestling as a Kid

When you are wrestling as a kid, your purpose is to get the other guy to surrender, to give up, to say uncle.

Prayer is the same thing. You are wrestling with God and He's wrestling with you. God's goal is to bless you, but He needs you to give up first, to let go. He doesn't want you to give up praying, but to give up fighting.

He wants you to let go of attempting to live your life your own way. God knows so much more what's better for you than you know. And everyday He is trying to get you to do and see things His way.

God Wants Us to Pray Fervently

Prayer must be fervent, meaning with zeal or great intensity. Jacob wrestled with God all night long and he wouldn't let go until God blessed him.

Think about something simple, like preparing food. You think about it, plan it, shop for it, prepare it, cook it, eat it, clean up after it... God wants us to pray with, at least, the same intensity we have for such simple things. If eating is so important to us, how much more important should spending time with God be?

God is constantly trying to get us to keep our minds on the things that will bless us. God wants to bless us even more so than we want to bless ourselves.

God Has a Faith Obligation

God doesn't keep it secret from us that He desires to bless us. In fact, He makes it so obvious that He promises it. Seek and ye shall find, knock and the door shall be opened. Matthew 7:7

God could have beaten Jacob, but He didn't. Instead, God blessed Jacob for his perseverance and commitment. It's the way He's set things up.

A New Walk

When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched. Genesis 32:25

When you encounter God, He wants to change your walk. Not your physical walk like He did in Jacob, but your Spiritual walk. He wants to change and renew you, so that you will be a testimony to His goodness.
