Image is Everything - Part 2, A Detailed Image
Miles McPherson - September 9, 2007

Message Recap

Over the past few weeks we have been looking at what God teaches about Image.

We have seen how society impacts what image means to us, and how we ought to up or sharpen our image, based upon what culture and other people tell us. However, as Christians when it comes to improving our image, we just have to look up and learn about God.

Pastor Miles opened this weekend's sermon talking about the details of creation and evolution.

While the intention of the sermon was not necessarily to refute or prove either side, but rather to show that the more we understand the complexity of creation and the responsibility given to us to care for it, the more we will understand the creative potential of our God image.

I. Individual Personality

When we let our creativity flow, people will see God in us, because He created us to be creative beings. When we look at creation all around us we see the immense creativity of God, in the sky and stars, the oceans, the trees, and the people He designed in His image.

All of us were individually created to be creative creatures. Pastor Miles talked about all the natural creations of God, such as fruits, vegetables, and so on that are compatible and helpful for our bodies, all because it is part of God's design.

M. Moral Mirror

As moral creative creatures we are to interpret and declare creation's divine message. We see in creation the character of God. Psalm 19:1-2 states, the heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.

We ourselves as creative beings display and declare God's divine message, created in His image, as a moral mirror of Him!

A. Authority to Rule

As responsible creative creatures we are to promote and protect creation's purpose. Genesis 2:15-17 states, The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

God gave man responsibility over His creation. He tells us what to do, and we are to do it.

Pastor Miles showed two different pictures of a dog. One dog had been abused and hurt quite badly, while the other dog was a normal healthy happy dog, as God intended it to be. Gazing upon the picture of the injured and bloody dog caused people to hurt and sigh with disgust and sadness that a dog could be hurt in such a way.

What happened to that dog was never what God intended. He stamps on our hearts His conscience. Because of that, we do react to things like the hurt dog with such emotions, because God created us to know what is good and what is bad, what is wrong and what is right.

G. God's Friend

Creation is the expression of God's creativity.

As reliable creative creatures we are to glorify God for His creativity. Romans 1 gives great insight to what God's creation is all about.

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. Romans 1:20-25

Other Scripture tells us that only a fool says in his heart there is no God. Creation is the expression of God's creativity. When we look at the vastness and beauty of the universe in which we live, we see the handiwork of a faithful God. The organization, in which we exist, from sunrise to sunset, screams the work of an intelligent designer!

E. Eternal Spirit

We were created to worship our creator in eternity.

We were created to worship our creator in eternity. God created us to be eternal beings just as He is. Therefore, our relationship with Him is forever!!!

Revelation 4:11 express the sentiment of eternal worship of our creator! You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.

Finding the Creative Potential of our God Image

Are we happy with our lives? Do we like what we are doing and where we are at? Are we where God intended us to be? Sometimes we become so busy looking to the left or the right that we fail to look up to God to see and know how He made us and what He intends for our lives.

Pastor Miles challenged us for this week to identify a mundane element in our lives and ask the Lord to show us a more creative and exciting way to achieve it!

Image is Everything

We are the only beings on earth uniquely made in God's image. This 8-part series shows us the responsibilities of bearing the image of God. God created us to be creative individuals, thereby glorifying God for His creativity.
