Body Language - Part 4, Living Word
Miles McPherson - October 25, 2009

Message Recap

One of the reasons the American population is experiencing so much disease and obesity today is because of the unhealthy diets so prevalent in our nation. While live food has enzymes that are a catalyst for digestion, absorption, healing, growth, and regeneration (unless cooked over 116 degrees, which kills the enzymes), cooked and processed food is dead. We can digest it, but it is more difficult for the body to manage, some of it is toxic, and it can cause many health problems as a result.

God's Word is to our spirits as healthy food is to our bodies. It is alive, a spiritual food that aids in our health, healing, growth and regeneration. It's interacting with us, working in us, doing things with and to us.

1. God's Word is a life giver. Psalm 119:25

God's Word is not just ink on paper; it imparts life to you and shapes your mind.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

God tells us that if we obey His Word we will have prosperity and success. This does not mean we will have financial wealth or that we will not experience pain or suffering. (Think of Jesus - He has spiritually successful and prosperous in amazing ways, yet he had no belongings and experienced incredible suffering in His death.) By prosperity and success, God means to always provide for you and to give you access to what He wants you to have when you need it.

2. God's Word is a soul invader. Hebrews 4:12

Hebrews 4:12 says that that God's Word is sharper than a two-edged sword and pierces to the soul.

My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to Your word…My soul melts from heaviness; strengthen me according to Your word. Psalm 119:25, 28

What do you do when you have a burden on your heart? Do you seek an addiction to fill the emptiness you feel? Only God's Word can satisfy you fully. God wants to change your heart, purify you, set you free, and give you abundant life. He can take even the most messed up life and turn it around.

3. God's Word is a truth discerner. Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

There is only one God speaking to us. He says the same things to all of us, guiding us in righteousness and convicting us when we sin. Imagine the hurt and pain we could avoid and the benefits we could reap if we all listened to Him all the time!

Pastor Miles shared an experience he had recently in which he found out something about someone and really wanted to tell his wife. But each time he was about to speak the words, God's Word checked him, asking, "What are you doing? What good does this accomplish? What is your real intent?" Each time, Miles had to work hard to keep silent. But he knew that God was right, of course, and had exposed his real intent, which was just to gossip.

4. God's Word is a heart cleanser. Psalm 119:9-11

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word…Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 199:9, 11

How can your heart be cleansed? It can't be transformed simply by coming to church. You have to read the Word, live the Word, and obey the Word every day. That is the only way you will grow.

Pastor Miles was recently cleaning the whitewall tires of his motorcycle, scrubbing with a rag for hours on end with very little result. After weeks of working on this project, his brother-in-law told him he needed to buy a special spray cleaner. After simply squirting the cleaner and wiping it away, all the dirt just fell off.

God's Word is that way, too. As a human, your heart is deceitful and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9)-you can't heal yourself of sin because you can't put fire out with fire. But God's Word can cleanse you immediately and fully.

5. God's Word is a mind builder. Psalm 119:97-99

Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. Psalm 119:97-99

When a TV host is on camera, s/he wears an earpiece so that the producer can speak privately to him or her in the midst of an interview to give him or her instructions about the show, how much time is left, etc.

God's Word can speak to you anytime to tell you things you don't know-even in the midst of conversation or confrontation. God can make you wiser than you are and can direct your path in every way. The question is: will you listen to Him? Will you act when He asks you to?
