Superman was a character who had power and strength, could leap tall buildings, and was faster than a speeding train. Did you know that God you created to exercise supernatural power?

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The same Holy Spirit that was involved in creation, performed miracles in Jesus’ life, and raised people from the dead lives in you.

The same Holy Spirit that was involved in creation, performed miracles in Jesus’ life, and raised people from the dead lives in you. Not only is it biblical for you to expect to see God’s power in your life, it’s logical, and important! The Holy Spirit is God and therefore cannot change – He can’t suddenly become weak because “times have changed.”

In today’s scripture from 1 Kings, the prophet Elijah was living in the north of Israel under the rule of King Ahab. The King’s wife Jezebel was powerful and insistent that the people of Israel turn from their God and worship the god of fertility, Baal. Though Ahab was king, Jezebel was killing prophets and religious leaders who represented the Lord. The people of Israel were confused and afraid; many were worshiping God and Baal.

So Elijah proclaimed a drought over the land; if Baal was the god of fertility who supposedly made it rain, then God would cause the rain to cease. Though other prophets were in hiding, Elijah revealed himself boldly, calling Ahab to Mount Carmel along with all the prophets of Baal and the people of Israel with the goal of displaying God’s power.

Pastor Miles challenged all of us to have an “Elijah spirit” in our day and age, as God is being shunned more and more by our culture. Just as Elijah’s only proof that God is real was the display of God’s power, the first place others need to see God’s existence is at work in your life. If your life is no different now than it was when you first met God, then people shouldn’t believe in Him. But God has given us power to heal, pray for people, and even raise the dead!

1. Choose this day whom you will serve. 1 Kings 18:21, Joshua 24:15

And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.1 Kings 18:21

If you want God to move in your life, choose to serve Him. Wherever you are – at work, with friends, in a café, at school – as conversations take place, a line is drawn in the sand. Will you believe everything around you or God’s Word?

In 1 Kings 18:21, no one answered when Elijah challenged them and asked who their god was. They didn’t want to be found out, but God wants to know who will stand with Him!  Pastor Miles challenged is with all that is happening around us to love people – liars, depressed, gay, straight, fornicators, addicts—love them and call them all back to Jesus.

Without Christ, we are all hopeless sinners. Even now, we are still in the process of being transformed. We should encourage others not to endorse any part of us (thought, word, or action) that doesn’t agree with and honor God. There are many false gods out there who will tell you to do whatever you want and whatever you feel, but there is only one true God and one true way.

2. Be willing to stand alone. 1 Kings 18:22

Elijah was willing to stand by himself because he knew that with God on his side, they formed a majority.

Each side was to prepare a bull and call upon their god to burn the sacrifice.

So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice; no one answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made.
And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.”  So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention.
1 Kings 18:26-29

How many years have you been living your own way? Just think of your life, what you do with your time, and how you express yourself. Is that working for you?  God loves you so much and wants so much for you. The further you drift from Him, the less of His glory there will be in your life. There’s nothing better than God anywhere!  Nothing will satisfy the craving and design of the image of God in side of you except for the Lord Himself.

Then an altar was built for the Lord. Elijah had water poured on it again and again so that fire would be impossible to start there by any means except the supernatural power of God.

And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”
Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”
1 Kings 18:36-39

It’s the presence of God in your life that has real power.

People will know that you love God by witnessing His presence in your life. Just coming to church, reading the Bible, or quoting a scripture doesn’t make you a Christian. It’s the presence of God in your life that has real power.

When you pray to God, you must be confident that He hears you. You are not talking to the air, but to a God who knows you and loves you, has thoughts, feelings and a plan and purpose for your life. You are praying to a living God who can answer and respond.

Are you willing to stand alone like Elijah did, a steward of God’s power to represent Him in the world today? Let us turn away from the status quo; we want to represent Him and be a conduit of His love, power, grace, and forgiveness to everyone He brings into our lives. We don’t want to just come to church or just survive while hiding under the radar, but to become all that God desires us to be.

This 5-part series teaches us about the supernatural power God has granted His children to be a blessing to others. In Part 1, Pastor Miles encourages us to choose to serve God, walk in His supernatural power, and prepare for the challenging times ahead for us as Christians.
