Are You Ready? - Part 1, Be Prepared
Mickey Stonier - August 9, 2015

Message Recap

Today Pastor Mickey spoke to us about practical and spiritual preparedness.

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.2 Chronicles 7:14

As our government, courts, and many aspects of our land drift further away from God’s precepts, God reaches out and communicates to His people, not to the government. It’s on us to demonstrate and live out our faith and God says He will heal our land.

It is always time to share with others and be generous with what God has for us. We must learn how to get outside of ourselves to care for others.

It is always time to share with others and be generous with what God has for us. We must learn how to get outside of ourselves to care for others.

Less than 10% of people in our country are prepared for a disaster; even if they have recently experienced one they often do not take steps to prepare for the future. At all the campuses today there were services and information tables to learn more, pick up family guides, and even purchase services to have this preparation work done for you.

You can probably remember a time when the power had been out for several hours. It feels inconvenient, but it can be fun, too, eating by candlelight, convening with neighbors, etc. But what if a power outage lasted several days or a week?

We need to realize that less than 1% of our population are going to be expected to care for the other 99%. A challenge today is to do your part and consider your neighbors. Do you know where to meet your family if not at home? How to turn the gas off?  How to turn off the water lines?

“In 2012 there were 357 natural triggered disasters registered. Research estimates that there are approximately 268 million victims affected by natural disasters each year.” Source: Guha-Sapir, D., Hoyois, P., Below, R. (2013). We need to have an understanding of the times in which we are living and know what we ought to do.

Thirty percent of scripture is prophecy. There are specific predictions that detail the coming of the Messiah, all which came to fruition, and there are still more prophesies yet to be fulfilled. We need to be familiar with what awaits the world at the end of the age. Here are some important scriptures that you can study with your life group in more detail:

1 Chronicles 12:32
Ezekiel 37:38
Revelation 13
Daniel 12
Isaiah 41:10 &13
Isaiah 48:13
1 Timothy 1:7

Pastor Mickey shared three practical things you can do to focus on your responsibility to tell people about Jesus and show His love before He returns and judgment comes to a God-rejecting world:

Prepare practically. Proverbs 30:24-28

Key Verse: The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer; (Proverbs 30:25 NKJV)

This verse tells us that there is wisdom in preparing for the future. If the ants prepare, how much more should we?  (To find out more about how to prepare for disaster, text “disaster” to 59769.)

When we experience tragedy or disaster, the emotional engagement we experience triggers cues in the brain to store these memories vividly, which is a protection mechanism to guard us from future hurt. Sometimes these experiences can bring out the best in people and sometimes they bring out the worst.

As dealing with disasters, crisis, and trauma take people to their core, they reflect on their relationships, perspectives, and what is most important in their lives. The learn lessons that cause them to grow and change. This is called post-traumatic growth.

You can prepare not only to help yourself in a disaster, but to be able to minister to others who are suffering a crisis. If you are interested in serving as a chaplain in your community or with an agency during a disaster, the Rock is offering trainings each quarter. (See

Prepare purposefully. 1 Peter 3:13-18

Key Verse: “ your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with a gentleness and respect,” (1 Peter 3:15 ESV)

What is God’s purpose in my life?  You are never too old or young to discover purpose.

Ask God to allow you to see others the way He does. With His perspective, sharing His Good News and showing His love, you can impact many in His name. The Rock offers many opportunities for ministry, missions service, and Impact195. Consider exploring some classes to help you to discover your purpose!

Prepare prophetically. Amos 4:6-12, Matthew 7:21-23

Key Verse: Prepare to meet your God... (Amos 4:12 NKJV)

God’s Word is true and His promises are sure. Scripture tells us that one day we will all stand before Him to give an account, so we should prepare for the day we’ll see God face to face.

Most religions teach that we must do good things to be accepted by God, but Christianity says that none are good and that our works do not qualify us for salvation. We are only accepted because of God’s grace, by the work Jesus did on the cross. When we see God, we want to have the assurance that only a relationship with Christ can provide!

Are You Ready?

This 4-part message series prepares us for times of disaster, empowering us to face adversity with the capacity to help others. In Part 1, Pastor Mickey gives us a realistic picture of the cause and effects of a natural disaster and encourages us to be prepared with plans and supplies for when a natural disaster occurs.
