Who Are You? - Part 3, The Gate of Heaven
Miles McPherson - December 10, 2017

Message Recap

What if Evil came up to you, and said, “Who are you; because I am Evil and I am going to destroy your life.” What if Fear came up to you and said, “I am going to paralyze you today, who are you?”  What if Discouragement, Anxiety, and Anger came up to you and said, “I am going to destroy you; who are you to stop me?” Pastor Miles said your answer is “I am the Gate of Heaven.”

If you understand your identity in Christ, then you know how you are to go about your life.

A gate is a transition point from one environment or world, to another world. You are the Gate of Heaven. Why is this important? If you understand your identity in Christ, then you know how you are to go about your life. We have to know who we are and what we have been given, so we know what we should do.

The devil constantly tells us what we are not and what we cannot do. As Christians, we need to focus on who we are by renewing our minds daily based on what the Bible says and not what culture says, your enemies, critics, or even your friends. Sometimes your friends can mislead you.

In today’s passage from Genesis 28, Jacob falls asleep and has a dream of angels ascending up and down a ladder that reaches from heaven to earth. God is at the top of the ladder and He speaks to Jacob:

Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!” Genesis 28:13-17

Jacob wakes up from his dream and states that because God is in this place, this place is the house of God. When we think of house of God, we think of the dwelling place of God. Pastor Miles recollects going to church as a kid because that’s where God was. Some people come to Rock Church because they believe God is in the building. God is no more in this building than He is outside the building. You are the church! God lives in you!

The concept of God living in us started with Jesus in:

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us (Tabernacle), and we beheld His glory, John 1:14a

God made us in His image like we make a glove in the image of a hand. He made us in His image so that He can live inside us. You are the house of God! The Holy Spirit lives in you! Some people say that they feel the presence of God when they walk into church. God is in the people in the building.  What they are sensing in the presence of God in the people, not the building.

1. I am the gate of heaven.

There is something inside every one of us that is not of this world. It is something from God’s world that is in you. That’s the gate, a transition place from one place to another. The Holy Spirit lives in you and expresses Himself through you.

2. I have access to an open heaven.

Most of us are preoccupied with the circumstances under which we live rather than the open heaven under which we live. In reality, we live under an open heaven where we have access to everything in Heaven. In practicality, we live under circumstances such as I don’t have enough money, I am getting sick, I don’t have a job, I’m not getting married, etc. The devil uses these circumstances to tell us that we are failures, we are too old, it’s not going to work out, etc.

We are constantly bombarded with these circumstances. However, God says that is not who you are. You are the gate of heaven. You are the transition point for everything of heaven unto this earth. You have to decide what you believe about yourself. Are you under circumstances, or do you walk under an open heaven?

When the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus, Jesus lived a supernatural life and demonstrated the Kingdom of God because the Holy Spirit gave Jesus everything He needed.

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3:21-22

In John 1:51, Jesus told Nathanael that just as the heavens opened for me, they will open for you:

And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” John 1:51

When God opened the heavens for Jesus, He never closed them! The devil wants you to walk under circumstances, but you can walk under an open heaven.

3. I will express the supernatural presence of God.

God wants to express His glory through us. Towards the end of Jesus ministry on earth, Jesus told his disciples that He would go to heaven and that He did not want them to do any ministry until the Holy Spirit came upon them.

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8

You need to believe that when the heavens open above you, you are going to receive power and that you will become the gate of heaven that God will flow through and change peoples’ lives. If you pursue God with your whole heart and do not put a limit on Him, then you will live under an open heaven with the presence of God residing in you.

Who Are You?

This 5-part series examines the identity God has given us and teaches us how to walk confidently in that calling. In Part 3, Pastor Miles reviews the account of Jacob's ladder to discuss what it means to live under an open Heaven.
