Presence of God - Part 2, The Face of God
Miles McPherson - June 10, 2018

Message Recap

When Pastor Miles was practicing to deliver his Spanish message a few weeks ago, he needed to use FaceTime to deliver the rehearsal to the pastors who were providing feedback. It wasn’t enough to preach in order for them to hear him; he needed to see their faces in order to understand their reception of the message and the emotions that they had while listening. “Face time” with others is important because it creates real connection, as our faces contain the elements of expression and communication.

The presence of God is His favor expressed through God’s face.

Envision that being in God’s presence is being right up close, in God’s face.

Make Your face shine upon Your servant;
Save me for Your mercies’ sake.
Psalm 31:16

If you are calling out to God and asking Him to bless your actions, even though they are sinful or against His will, then He may choose to turn His face from you.

“Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.” Matthew 18:10-11

If you are calling out to God and asking Him to bless your actions, even though they are sinful or against His will, then He may choose to turn His face from you. God calls you to be faithful to your spouse, so He will not bless your adultery. God calls you to be honest, so He will not bless your deceit. He calls you to walk in truth, so He will not bless your lies. However, when you are willing to humbly repent of your sin and ask for forgiveness, He will turn to you again.

“And when the Lord saw it, He spurned them,
Because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters.
And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them…’"
Deuteronomy 32:19-20a

A person’s face represents the organs of expression. The face is the personality, the organs of their communication, the means by which we listen, speak, and communicate our thoughts and emotions. Often we seek God’s hand to move, to bless, or to give us things, but God wants us to seek His face.

The presence of God is His favor expressed through…

1. The living words spoken by the mouth of God. Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

All day long we internally hear garbage about our lives: what we can’t do, what we’ll never be, that we’re too tall, too short, too loud, or too quiet. In the presence of God, none of those words are there, but rather the words of life, peace, joy, comfort, and optimism. You need look no further than God to find all the answers you need!

Make these declarations:

  • I declare You are speaking life over me.
  • I declare You are speaking affirmation over me.
  • I declare You are speaking organization over me.
  • I declare You are speaking clarity over me.
  • I declare You are speaking hope over me

God can speak life to you through fellow believers who can turn you to the truth of His Word and remind you of His character.

2. The powerful vision and perspective of the eyes of God. 1 Corinthians 13:11-12

When God looks, He sees things that your eyes don’t see. Even before you came into the world, God Himself knit you together and made you wonderful with unseeable interests, talents, and gifts.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 1 Corinthians 13:11-12

Now we understand partially what God is doing in our lives. We understand partially what He is saying to us. The more we walk with God, it gets clearer. Now we may know in part, but when we see Him face to face, we will know him as we are known to Him. We will see what He sees now. He sees your future, how your past can be redeemed for good, the potential of your gifts, the possibility resulting from your faithful prayers, and how your spiritual gifts can flourish.

Make these declarations:

  • I declare that You see a blessed future for me.
  • I declare that You see me as forgiven.
  • I declare that You see me as accepted.
  • I declare that You look at me with loving eyes.
  • I declare that Your perspective on my life is better than mine.

God is not mad at you and He doesn’t want you to earn anything from Him. He just wants you to be in His face, to seek His presence.

3. The thoughts of hope in the mind of God. Jeremiah 29:11-13

Your mind is separate from your thoughts or your brain. With your mind, you can evaluate your thoughts. You can ask yourself: what am I thinking? Why am I thinking this? I don’t want to think this.

Your mind can get counsel from the world and agree with the negative thoughts, or your mind can get counsel from God and combat the negative thoughts, rejecting the thoughts that cause you harm.

You need to know what God thinks about you!

God’s thoughts toward you are only good. He ONLY wants to bless you and see you flourish. Even when you sin, He wants to forgive you, He loves you anyway, and He disciplines you with the goal of restoring you to a right relationship with Him.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13

Make these declarations:

  • I declare that Your thoughts toward me are precious.
  • I declare that Your thoughts toward me are many.
  • I declare that Your thoughts toward me are higher than my thoughts.
  • I declare that Your thoughts toward me are constant and good and never evil.
  • I declare that Your thoughts toward me give me a hope and a future.

4. The compassionate listening ears of God. Psalm 116:1

Day and night the devil accuses you before God as a fraud and a hypocrite. If you sat down and wrote out hypothetical conversations between God and Satan about you, you could probably write a long list of accusations, because doubtless you have heard them in your own mind. But God chooses not to listen to the evil accusations about you. He listens to what is good and positive.

I love the Lord, because He has heard
 My voice and my supplications.
Psalm 116:1

When you get on your knees and you pray humbly to God, He’s going to listen!

Make these declarations:

  • I declare that You are not listening to the evil said about me.
  • I declare that You are never deaf toward me.
  • I declare that You hear my prayers.
  • I declare that You listen to my cries.
  • I declare that You ignore the negativity of my critics.
  • I declare that You are waiting for me to call to you, so that you can tell me great and mighty things that I do not know.
