Thanks & Giving - Part 1, I'm So Blessed
Miles McPherson - October 28, 2018

Message Recap

Pastor Miles begins his message by describing a story about when he was in high school. He bought sunglasses that were pink. The lenses were pink so everything looked pink when he looked at things. Imagine if you had a pair of sunglasses where everything you looked, you only saw the good in it. Every person you saw, the glasses showed you the good.

So instead of complaining, you not only saw the good things in your life, but you also gave thanks to God for them. Because God only does good in your life.

And we know that in all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

God works out everything for good.

All things work together for good. Everything! God works out everything for good IF you love Him, which means obey Him. You have to obey Him and trust Him.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. Psalm 100:4

God said, I don’t want you coming into my presence complaining. Enter into my gates with thanksgiving! Thank me!

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thess 5:16-18

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col 3:17

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippinas 4:6-7

Anxiety is an anticipated disaster. If you are anxious about something right now, you are anticipating something negative to happen. Most of the time, the negative things we think never even happen. Be anxious for nothing.

When you are thankful, God brings healing into your life. When you are thankful for your money, God brings healing to your finances. Some of you have issues with people and you can correct those relationships by being thankful for them, to them. A relationship can be healed simply by saying, “Thank you.”

Most of us are hoarders of thankfulness. Because we don’t want to give thanks to flush out the bitterness.

When you ask Christ to be your savior, your messed up relationship with God is healed. Your relationship with the Spirit of God is healed.

When you thank God and praise Him and honor Him, things begin to align with the way they should be.

Pastor Miles references a psychology study from The Journal of Psychology that says that gratitude opens the door for more relationships. Gratitude improves physical health. It improves psychological health – it reduces toxic emotions in the brain. It enhances empathy and also helps people sleep better. Gratitude reduces stress and plays a major role in overcoming trauma.

Pastor Miles turns us to the book of Luke to remind us of the story of the 10 lepers:

Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” Luke 17:11-19

He asks how many of the lepers were healed. Ten. Ten lepers were healed. But only one went back to say thank you. So that means that nine did not go back and say thank you.

The Samaritan went back, fell on his face, at His feet, and gave thanks.

1. Praise God loud and often.

Everyday, you should be telling God thank you. As loud as you complain, you should praise God. There are so many professional complainers. It’s so easy to find things to be negative about. But God says, “if you can perfect thanking me and honoring me, I will do miracles in your life.

2. God will brag about you.

Once you brag about God, He will brag about you.

Many times we ask for something but we don’t even know what to do with it. So many people just come to church and complain.

But verse 16 says that he fell on his face and gave thanks. Jesus responded, “Where are the nine?” He blessed every single one of them but they couldn’t even say thank you?

The one that went back, he said thank you, and he received a blessing that the other guys did not. There is a blessing waiting for you when you say thank you. Your thank you, your generosity, your generous thankfulness to God is a key to open up a door to a blessing.

3. God will grant a second blessing.

Many times, we ask why we don’t have this or that. It’s because we are hoarding to ourselves. You have to get rid of one thing to get another. You are holding onto a $10 toy when God wants to give you a $10,000 toy. Why? So you can share with somebody. Not to hoard it to yourself.

Pastor Miles refers to the passage about the woman at Simon’s house who wiped Jesus’ feet with her tears and hair. This “sinner” was wiping Jesus’ feet and the religious person was thinking he was the good one with Jesus. But Jesus says that he didn’t give Him water for His feet or kiss Him or anoint His head with oil. But this woman washed his feet with her tears, hadn’t ceased kissing His feet, and she anointed Him with expensive oil. And he was calling her a sinner. But Jesus was bragging about her.

There is a blessing waiting for you if you’re a thankful person.

Instead of complaining about what you don't have, imagine if you could understand and see all the great things God does and God could show you greater works in your life. There is a blessing waiting for you.
