The Fine Line - Part 6, Destroyed by Deception
Miles McPherson - October 12, 2008

Message Recap

What would happen to your faith if there were laws that prohibited Christianity?

As we see today in the story of Daniel, if you honor God, He will honor you.

1. Live a life blameless before your enemies. Daniel 6:5-9

In this passage, Daniel has distinguished himself among the king's administrators because of his excellent spirit and the king plans to appoint him in charge of whole kingdom. The other administrators envy Daniel and seek to find charges against Daniel, but they can't because he is trustworthy and faithful. The plotting administrators decide that the only way to destroy Daniel is to find fault with his faith in God. As we'll see later, even this cannot succeed because God honors Daniel's faithfulness to Him by providing protection in the grimmest of circumstances.

If you want God to support you through thick and thin, then you need to live an upright life. Man can't do anything to you that cannot be overcome by God. Maybe you are wondering if God is God on your side; He wants to be - so give him something to work with!

2. Establish a prayer custom. Daniel 6:10

Through their scheming, the administrators convince the king to pass a decree forbidding his citizens to pray to any god or man other than himself, lest they be thrown into the lions' den. But Daniel is undaunted by this; he continues to seek God just as he always has.

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10

When do you pray? How? Where? If you don't have a regular prayer custom to focus your communication with God, here's a model you can use:

AWCIPA Prayer Model (Note: Spend an equal amount of time for each letter.)

  • A - Admire and thank God. Psalm 8:9
Thank God for everything you can think of.
  • W - Wait quietly before God. Psalm 46:10
Sit quietly and listen to God speak to you and write it down.
  • C - Confess your sin. 1 John 1:9, Psalm 103:12
    Confess your sins to God
  • I - Intercede for others. 1 Chronicles 4:9
    Pray for other people.
  • P - Petition for yourself. Psalms 51:10-12, John 14:12-14
Ask for a pure heart. Ask for your house to sell.
  • A - Admire and thank God. Psalm 8:9
Thank God for everything you can think of.

3. Seek innocence before God. Daniel 6:22

When the king learns that Daniel must be thrown to the lions because of his decree, he is distraught because he is cannot change the decree to save Daniel. He fasts in his chamber and is unable to sleep. When morning comes, he races to the lion's den and calls out to Daniel, hoping he is still alive.

Daniel answered, "O king, live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king." Daniel 6:21-22

Daniel's faithfulness to God was the only thing that could save him from the situation. Are you in some sort of lion's den? Maybe you are in a difficult situation because of someone else, or because of your own bad choices. Today you need to seek innocence before God also. It is possible to experience trauma - be it financial, relational, emotional, or physical - and still come out stronger and thanking God! You have to trust Him, thank Him, and be known as someone who is faithful to Him.
