Family of Origin - Part 1, The Power of Ownership
Miles McPherson - September 9, 2012

Message Recap

A child’s family is the most important group in his/her life. Through family, we build an image of who we are, learn what to feel and how to feel it, gain a concept of right and wrong, and understand who God is.  Whether we have developed correct or incorrect understandings of all of these things, we have all been shaped by our families.

Because we are all sinners (as well as our families), we all have some level of dysfunction in our perspectives.  But God is not dysfunctional.  He is wisdom, truth, and always has the correct perspective and a right character. We pray that as you experience this series about family, you can connect with God and allow Him to readjust your perspectives.

Possession - Control of something.

Ownership - Commitment to someone.

I am committed we will always be together.

I am eager to tell the world we will be together.

I am glad that we will be together.

I am willing to make sacrifice to fulfill commitment of ownership.

These are truths that God wants you to understand about yourself:

1. I am someone who has been loved from the beginning.

When you communicate love to a little child, something good happens in his/her heart and mind.  It builds security and belonging.  But when this basic love is missing, children learn to feel alone and disowned (Proverbs 22:6).

Love is about honoring our commitments to one another.  Read this verse in a new light as we substitute the words:

A new commandment I give to you, that you [own your commitments to] one another; as I have [owned my commitment to] you, that you also [own your commitments to] one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you [own your commitments to] one another.” John 13:34-35

Love, or owning a commitment, is not about liking or enjoying that person all the time.  Love is unconditional; it says that we are committed no matter what that person does.  That is God’s love for us, and it is the way He calls us to live with one another.

Maybe you did not experience love from the beginning of your life.  Maybe you often feel unloved or you wonder if love will stay or ever return.  Your feet are on sand, not a rock, and you can’t have a sense of security in your life.  It’s time to fully understand God’s commitment to you:

We love Him because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19

From the foundations of the world, God has loved you, and He will never stop

From the foundations of the world, God has loved you, and He will never stop.  He will never love you more or less.  This is not because of what you do or who you are, but because of who He is.  God has imposed value on you, therefore you are valuable beyond measure.

2. I am worthy of being loved and belonged to.

A person who is loved from the beginning has a sense of value and belonging.  How strong is your sense that you are not worthy of being loved? How often do you struggle with not being enough?

It could be that you learned to feel this way because of your childhood perceptions of how you were treated.  But regardless of how you feel, you are worthy of love and belonging.  You are worthy, not because of your beauty, intelligence, skills, or actions, but because God places worth on you.  Your worth cannot be changed by anyone, not even you.

How can you be sure that you are worthy?  Because…

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John  15:13

Jesus placed so much value on you that He laid down His life so that you could be saved.

3. I am proud to be who I am and can own myself.

Knowing that you are worthy, you can be satisfied with how God made you.  You can believe that He knew what he was doing!  The qualities He gave to you are good enough for Him, so now you can surrender them back to God for His purposes.

Every Christian should feel this value and love from God.  Once you have that, then your job is to build up others and make sure that they know His love as well.  No matter what hand you were dealt as a child (with a correct view of love and belonging or a dysfunctional one), you have a responsibility as an adult to correct that view and connect with your loving Father.  Today is the day!  Receive the love and healing He reaches out to you.

Family of Origin

This 6-part series reveals how our true family of origin is rooted in Christ. Despite our past, our future can be redeemed. In Part 1, Pastor Miles talks about how through our family, we build an image of who we are, learn what to feel and how we feel.
