At The Movies - Part 2, Jurassic World
Mile McPherson - August 21, 2016

Message Recap

Today’s message was based on the movie Jurassic World. The message contains movie clips from Jurassic World and for copyright purposes, we cannot have the message on our website. Pastor Ricky and Pastor Miles brings us a devotional on discipleship from this movie.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

If you started a relationship with the Lord, then you need to maintain and grow in that relationship.

As in Romans 10:9, if you have asked Jesus into your life and repented of your sins, your relationship with God  is off to a great start!  As in all relationships, if the relationship does not progress from the starting point, then there is no growth or intimacy in the relationship.  Pastor Ricky gave us this illustration: If the only time he spoke to his wife was on their wedding day, and the next day he were to move to a different state, then they would not have a really good relationship at all. If you started a relationship with the Lord, then you need  to maintain and grow in that relationship.   That’s where discipleship comes into play.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Galatians 6:2 tells us to carry each other’s burdens. Your struggles and troubles are not just for you, they are to be shared with your family. We are to challenge, push, encourage, and care for one another and keep each other accountable. In Jesus’ day, He talked with people, walked with people, loved on people and modeled for us His plan for discipleship.

Discipleship is not a churchy word that means Bible study. Discipleship seems like a big thing that you need to be trained to go disciple someone, but it really means just doing life together.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  Romans 12:2

Romans 12:2 teaches us how we should be transformed by the renewing of our mind. We have three enemies that come against us. The first one is our brokenness or our flesh. Everyone is born a sinner. That is our flesh. The second one is the world, things that are not of God or things that oppose God or are against God. Third is the demons that are constantly out to steal and destroy us. Pastor Ricky illustrates this point: If you are in a fight against one person, there is a chance you will win. However if you are fighting three people, the odds are stacked against you and you will most likely lose. With that in mind, we need to do life together as a family.

Being transformed by the renewing our you mind means that you need to be around people that believe the Bible, understand who God is and listen to the Holy Spirit. Don’t be conformed to the world and all the influences that are not of God, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

How do renew your mind? You hang around people that have renewed minds. That is what discipleship is all about. The Holy Spirit through the church will begin to illuminate and be the light. That is why it is said that the church is the light of the world.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:7-8

It’s amazing how we can train animals to jump, eat, speak, and do tricks on command, but we cannot train ourselves to think right, talk right, act right and live right. Do you have someone training you to follow God? How big of an obstacle is your training preparing you to overcome? Will your training sustain you through your own mistakes? If you have strayed away from God, are you willing to accept His forgiveness and come back to Him?

When Pastor Miles gave his life to the Lord,he had a lot of questions about the Bible, right and wrong behavior, money, his girlfriend, and how to live appropriately. One day, one of his teammates, who was tired of Miles asking him all these questions told him that needed to be discipled. Miles needed someone who would meet with him on a regular basis and teach him. Miles needed a God coach. This critical conversation eventually led Miles to a guy who discipled him. They spent time together every Tuesday, on their day off. Miles watched him every day at work. The training that Miles received from him set a foundation that Miles’ life still stands on.

If you are reading this and you have yet to have somebody in your life that can speak truth in your life to help you be transformed by the renewing of your mind, it is time today to get that person(s). You need someone who can disciple you. Someone who can train you, be a role model on how to walk with God, hold you accountable, and challenge you to be faithful to the things of God. This is what church is all about.
