Child Dedication

Child dedications are a time for Rock Church parents to publicly declare their intention to raise their children to KNOW God, GROW in community, and MAKE a difference.  This is a special time for family, friends, and Rock Church to commit to walking alongside and supporting disciples (YOU) who are making disciples (YOUR CHILD/REN)!

Child Dedications are available for families with children from birth to 4 years old. Mandatory class & ceremony details below. Our Rock Kids team commits to praying for your family every step of the way.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Child Dedication?

Child Dedication is a public commitment where parents present their child to the Lord and commit to raising them in a Christ-centered home. It reflects what we see in Scripture, such as in 1 Samuel 1:27–28 and Luke 2:22, where children were offered back to God.

Is Child Dedication the same as water baptism?

No — Child Dedication is not water baptism. It does not save a child or replace salvation. Baptism is a personal decision that follows an individual's profession of faith in Jesus (see Acts 2:38). Dedication is about the parents' commitment; baptism is about the child's personal faith.

Is there an age limit for Child Dedication?

Yes — at Rock Church, we dedicate children 4 years and younger because it aligns with the biblical model of dedicating children early. As children grow older, they begin to develop their own personal faith and relationship with Jesus.

Why do we dedicate children at a young age?

Dedication is modeled in Scripture as something done early in a child's life — similar to offering "first fruits" to the Lord. It's a way for parents to acknowledge from the beginning that their child belongs to God.

What if my child is older and wasn't dedicated?

You haven't missed your opportunity to honor God in your parenting. Scripture still calls you to raise your child in the ways of the Lord (Proverbs 22:6). You can still make a meaningful commitment — personally, as a family, or with your community — to lead your child spiritually.

Does Child Dedication guarantee my child will follow Jesus?

No — Dedication is not a guarantee of salvation. Each child will ultimately make their own decision to follow Christ. Dedication is about faithfully stewarding your role as a parent and pointing them toward Him.

Will my baby go to Heaven if they aren't dedicated or baptized?

Yes — a child's salvation is not dependent on a dedication or baptism ceremony. Scripture consistently shows that salvation is a work of God's grace, not something earned through rituals or actions (see Ephesians 2:8–9). While the Bible does not directly outline every detail about children and salvation, we trust in the character of God — His goodness, mercy, and justice. Jesus demonstrated deep love and value for children, saying, "Let the little children come to me…" (Matthew 19:14).

Child Dedication is a meaningful and important commitment for parents, but it is not what determines a child's eternity. Instead, it is an opportunity for parents to faithfully point their child toward a future personal relationship with Jesus.

What are parents committing to during Child Dedication?

Parents are committing to:

  • Prioritizing their own relationship with Jesus
  • Teaching their child God's Word (Deuteronomy 6:6–7)
  • Modeling a Christ-centered life
  • Being the primary disciples (spiritual leaders) in their home
Do both parents need to be believers?

Ideally, both parents are aligned spiritually, but if one parent is not a believer, the believing parent can still dedicate and lead spiritually in the home (see 1 Corinthians 7:14). We encourage unity where possible but will walk with families in all situations.

Can grandparents or extended family dedicate a child?

If a grandparent or extended family member is the child's primary guardian, they are absolutely welcome to participate in Child Dedication. In this role, they are faithfully stepping in as the primary spiritual influence and covering for that child.

For grandparents who are believers bringing their grandchildren to church and providing spiritual guidance — you are making an eternal impact. Keep going. Continue to pray for the child's parents, that they would come to know the Lord and, in time, step into that spiritual commitment themselves.

Child Dedication ultimately reflects a heart posture of surrender and responsibility before God — and we are honored to walk alongside any caregiver who is faithfully leading a child in His ways.

What role do godparents or family members play?

While not required biblically, parents are encouraged to invite family members, mentors, or small group leaders to witness and spiritually stand in agreement with them as a support system — people who will help encourage and reinforce a godly foundation in the child's life.

What happens during the dedication ceremony?

Families are prayed over, make a public commitment, and the church agrees to support them. It's both a family and community covenant.

What is the church's role in Child Dedication?

The church commits to partnering with parents — supporting, equipping, and encouraging them as they disciple their child.

How should we prepare for Child Dedication?
  • Pray as a family
  • Attend the mandatory Child Dedication Class
  • Reflect on your commitment to raise your child in faith
  • Have conversations about what intentional discipleship will look like in your home
  • Invite loved ones who will support you spiritually
